How To Declutter Your Home: A Simple 5-Step Process

If you’re looking to take advantage of the kids being in school, or just have had the final straw looking at the messy junk drawer or medicine cabinet, decluttering your manufactured home is beneficial for just about any homeowner.

Whether it’s a specific room you want to tidy, or you want to clean your entire home, there’s a calming feeling that comes with decluttering your home to relieve stress. The trick is knowing how to clean and organize your manufactured home in a way that works best for you.

Here are five tips to know about decluttering your mobile home this fall to reduce stress and improve your home living:

#1: Start Small

It’s easy to put off a cleaning project that seems huge and impossible. But, by starting with a few simple tasks, you can turn any decluttering journey into a successful one without the anxiety.

  • Write a to-do list. Start by narrowing down which spaces you’d like to declutter most. Don’t feel like you have to clean your entire house in just one day – stick with realistic expectations and plan around your schedule. Start with one room, or even one drawer or cabinet! Getting a few things sorted on your desk, or folding a few pieces of clothing, or cleaning a coffee table, or any other small tasks you can think of – those will add up over time. From there, it’ll feel so much easier to feel like you can take on larger areas of your mobile home.
  • Sort things out. In order to make the process more manageable, find boxes or bins to organize items based on donations, recycling, or garbage. Make a goal to fill it with as many clothes, toys, or other home goods that you can donate to your local thrift shop or charity. You can even recycle old electronics or e-waste kiosks you might find at grocery stores.

You’d be amazed at just how much can be decluttered in your home after a few days of work, even if it’s done just five minutes at a time. Once you complete one task, you’ll feel more empowered to take on more of them once you’ve found your groove!

#2: Create Your “Zen” Space

As you’re starting to plan a more organized home for yourself, think about what “zen” means to you. What makes you feel calmest, or the most “at peace” to prepare to do the best work in your manufactured home?

Whether you work from home or commute to work, it’s important to craft spaces in your manufactured home that bring out the best you have to offer for your home and those that may live with you. This is going to look different for everyone, but you want to think about what makes you feel happiest in your home.

Is it having fresh plants to take care of and invite some green into your home? Is it a well-maintained home office where you handle client meetings? Or maybe it’s having a loving home for your children to grow up and play in.

Or, maybe your “zen” lies in a bigger renovation. For example, let’s say you want to completely overhaul your living room furniture to bring more feng shui into your home’s main common area. Perhaps you’re even thinking about adding a screened-in porch or patio to your manufactured home.

Take some time to make a list of what makes you happiest in your home, big or small, and prioritize decluttering any given room to center around those things.

#3: Practice Seasonal Storage Habits

You should also think about how you can declutter your mobile home by taking advantage of seasonal storage habits.

For example, as the winter months begin to roll in, seasonal storage can simply mean putting away the swimsuits and trading them in for your cozy sweaters. Swapping out items allows you to keep necessary in-season clothes or decorations right where you need them, when you need them.

This way, you can further keep your home free of clutter and maximize storage space around the rest of your home.

You can maximize your storage space by following these tips:

  • Purchase containers that can easily stack and fit comfortably in your closet
  • Label your storage containers accordingly, so that you don’t have to pull out your entire closet to find that one sweater you wore last winter
  • Vacuum-sealing bags for clothes, towels, blankets, and other large bulky items are a lifesaver!

#4: Take Care of That Dust

No matter the season, dust is that annoying gray cloud that is constant year-long, so now’s a good time as any to wipe the dust bunnies off of your storage shelves, cabinets, kitchen counter, and any other surface that might be in need of some love.

This doesn’t have to be its own chore – you can do some light dusting as you’re moving about the house working on other projects! Taking an extra minute to dust off your space before or after you’re done decluttering a room can go a long way in not just keeping your mobile home dust-free, but keeping the air in your mobile home as dust-free as possible.

#5: Make it Fun!

Just because decluttering your home can be called a “chore” doesn’t mean it has to be! There are tons of ways to make the decluttering process fun and exciting. Here are just a few:

  • Get the family involved. Create a fun scavenger hunt for your children, encouraging them to look for certain objects around your home as they help clean up.
  • Set a time limit. Cleaning in twenty-minute sprints with breaks in between is a great way to get a lot done in just a little bit of time.
  • Turn up the tunes. Create a playlist with your favorite high-energy songs to crank up your cleaning sprints.

Consider these steps first as you embark on your decluttering journey. If you’re thinking of a larger-budget declutter or remodel project, check out our Mobile Home Parts & Supplies page.
